Anichebe scores as West Brom share points with Chlesea

Nigerian striker Victor Anichebe scored a late equaliser as West Bromwich Albion held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in a Premier League clash at the Hawthorns on Tuesday night.

Branislav Ivanovic’s goal late in the first half looked destined to hand the Blues a third successive league win and see them extend their lead at the top of the table.

However, Anichebe’s late header earned the Baggies a share of the spoils and means Chelsea can be knocked off the top of the standings by both Arsenal and Manchester City, who are in action on Wednesday.

Chelsea struggled to find an attacking rhythm in the first half but still managed to claim the lead just before the interval. In the third minute of added time, David Luiz flicked on a corner kick and Ivanovic arrived at the back post to tuck home the opening goal.

The Blues started the second half brightly and West Brom needed goalkeeper Ben Foster to make sharp saves to keep out efforts from Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o and attacking midfielder Willian.

Yet as the half wore on, the Baggies began to find some belief that they could get something out of a game against a Chelsea side performing well below their best. New recruit Thievy Bifouma missed two good opportunities just a few seconds apart in the 75th minute and shortly thereafter Chris Brunt pulled a shot just wide of the far post.

Finally, on 87 minutes, West Brom scored the goal their perseverance deserved. Saido Berahino provided an in-swinging cross from the left and substitute Anichebe beat Gary Cahill in the air to head home and make it 1-1 with his first career goal against Chelsea.
