NUGA games: OAU, UNICAL to play football final

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife and University of Calabar (UNICAL) on Friday qualified for the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) soccer final.

OAU, hosts of the games, defeated University of Lagos (UNILAG) 2-1 to qualify for the final, while UNICAL beat University of Jos (UNIJOS) 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out after a goalless 90 minutes encounter.

OAU and UNICAL will meet at the final on Saturday, when the 10-day event will formally close.

The third place match will also hold on Saturday between UNIJOS and UNILAG.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Egbunu-Olimene Chike, the coach of the OAU team, commended the performance of his boys.

“I look forward to clinching the gold, we went for a win and we got it,” Chike said, after his team qualified for the final.

The captain of the team, Faleti Ayo, said they defeated the University of Lagos team because they were determined.

He said, ``the game was hard, but we thank God for the result; the other team tried very well, but we were determined’’.

Dr Macpherson Ogunsemore, the coach of the UNILAG team, said his boys lost because of bad officiating.
