Woman dies after heated argument over market space

A 56-year-old woman reportedly passed away, Monday, at the popular Bisi Market in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The woman, identified as Mrs. Bosede Ajayi, suddenly slumped and died after engaging in a hot argument with another trader, Mrs.  Aminat Raheem, over ownership of a space to display their wares in the  market.
The incident was said to have  occurred in the morning when the women were preparing to display their wares in the market in readiness for the business of the day.

According to a source close to the market,  the two women had  engaged each other in a hot exchange of words  for about 30 minutes over where to display their wares in the market which holds every  five days, which  was said to have been settled by other traders.

While confirming the report, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state Command, Mr. Victor Babayemi, said it was a case of homicide.

He, however, disclosed that the altercation, according to an eyewitness,  one Mr. Marcus Adedayo, did not degenerate to fisticuffs.

Babayemi explained that  the 40-year old Aminat  had been arrested and detained at the Okesa Police Station in Ado Ekiti.

According to him,  preliminary investigations had confirmed that the matter was settled between the duo and Ajayi had started displaying her wares before she suddenly slumped and died.

He said the woman was immediately rushed to the Comprehensive Health Centre in Okeyinmi area of Ado-Ekiti, where efforts to save her life failed.

The police spokesman added that medical experts had confirmed that the victim had died, which he said prompted his men to effect the  immediate arrest of  the suspect.

The PPRO said: “Yes, I can confirm to you that the suspect is in our custody at Okesa  Police Station.  The woman argued with another person on where they should display their wares and shortly,  she fell and fainted.

“The victim’s body had been deposited  at the morgue of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital in Ado Ekiti while investigations are ongoing on what led to her death,” Babayemi said.
