Soldiers kill over 20 villagers in Nasarawa

There has been huge apprehension in Nasarawa State following the reported killing of over 20 people by a team believed to be soldiers in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

It was gathered that the soldiers stormed the settlements said to be inhabited by herdsmen early on Thursday, killing some of the residents in the process.

Channels Television correspondent in Nasarawa also gathered that some of the dead bodies had been deposited at the specialist hospital in Lafia, the state capital.

The military, however, said that it had not received any report of killings by troops in Nasarawa State.

The Defence Spokesman, Major-General Chris Olukolade, promised an investigation of the claim to ascertain if those who carried out the attack were soldiers truly.

This is coming as the military says troops have started clearing camps and mopping up arms in some north central states where they were deployed last week with the mandate to conduct operations aimed at addressing the deteriorating security situation in the area.

The defence spokesman explained that normalcy had been restored in three local governments of Benue State, while some arrests and recovery of arms have been made in the process.

He added that the mission, tagged ‘operation restore peace’, had also resulted in the destruction of militant camps, arrests, as well as recovery of arms in Plateau, Kaduna and Niger states.
