Student to spend one month in prison for stealing phone

For stealing a handset worth N10,000, an FCT Senior Magistrates’ Court in Karu on Tuesday sentenced a student, Paul Ishaya, 20, to one month in prison.

Senior Magistrate Sharon Ishaya sentenced the student after he pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal trespass and theft.

Ishaya, however, gave the convict the option of paying N5,000 in fine, and ordered him to pay N10,000 in compensation to the complainant.

The magistrate also ruled that in default of the payment, the convict would spend additional two months in prison without an option of fine.

The convict begged the court for leniency, blaming his action on the devil and poverty.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Umar Mohammed, told the court earlier that the case was reported at the station on March 30 by Hamidu Markus of Karu Village, Abuja.

Mohammed said the convict entered Markus’ room and stole his Star Time phone valued at N10,000 and that he confessed to the crime during interrogation at the police station.

He said the phone had yet to be recovered from the convict, and urged the court to order the Ishaya to pay N10,000 in compensation to the complainant.
