Messi's new role‏ and how it will affect @FCBarcelona - by @batundemusic

FC Barcelona has started the 20014/2015 season in spectacular form with an unbeaten record in all matches played ( 5 in Liga and 1 in UCL). They are also yet to concede a goal in any of these matches, a feat they share with Juventus FC in the entire top 5 divisions in Europe.

This is an interesting start for any new coach embarking on a new project. Yet there is still one curious re occurrence in all these matches. It is that FC Barcelona struggle to breakdown defenses and create few goalscoring chances that they are known for. The high point is the game vs Malaga at the Rosaleda where the team failed to register a single shot on target against a stubborn and well organized Malaga side.
The reason can be attributed to the fact that Leo Messi, Barça's biggest star now plays in a deeper role far from dangerous areas. His new role as a provider rather than a finisher has seen him provide more assists than goals but has also blunted Barça's ‎frontline. In all matches so far, Messi is still decisive for Barça as ever judging by the matchwinning assist ( 1vs Villareal in 1nil win, 2 vs Bilbao in 2nil win, 1vs APOEL in UCL in 1nil win etc) but his goalscoring has drastically reduced.

It is being debated that coach Luis Enrique is trying to make room for Suarez when he returns from his 4month lengthy ban in October. For now, with Neymar upfront( he isn't a center-forward), a misfiring Pedro( who is a winger),combined with Munir and Sandro two young and upcoming centre forwards far from maturity Barça doesn't have a proven and standard centre forward upfront.

Until Suarez returns ( and providing he gels in quickly), Barça will continue to struggle to breakdown defenses. And one thing is certain, if Enrique continues deploying Messi in this new provider role then his goalscoring statistics will reduce drastically.
